Fall Scholarships Applications / New Veterinary Technician Student Scholarship Fund

News from. . .

The NVMA Centennial Scholarship Foundation, Inc.

By Dr. Bob Stout, Treasurer

Applications now open for fall Scholarships

The Foundation Board of Directors met in June and set the values of this year’s fall scholarships for veterinary students. Applicants will vie for 23 scholarships with a total value of $ 31,200—the largest award total ever.  The growth is due to a newly endowed scholarship (Jeanine Cockerill Memorial Scholarship) and additional funds donated to existing scholarship funds.

All Nebraska resident veterinary students in the VM II, III, or IV classes attending an accredited veterinary college are eligible to apply. In recent years 14 to 20 students have applied and some students receive more than one scholarship. Employers, mentors and parents of veterinary students may encourage students to apply.

Applications are accepted now and close on October 15th. Information is available on the website:   NEVMA | Veterinary Student Scholarships (nvma.org)

New Scholarship Fund available for Veterinary Technician Students

Dr. Joey Gaines has observed the foundation from a distance, but shares our pride in the fact that our organization provides scholarships for not just veterinary students, but pre-veterinary students, and post-DVM graduate students, or those seeking certification in acupuncture.

But she saw that something was missing. Dr. Gaines and her husband Adam inquired how they might help fill that void. She writes, “Adam and I, and our family, love the veterinary profession. We strongly believe that veterinary technicians are vital to the success of quality, progressive medicine and surgery.  Unfortunately, they have been undervalued and underappreciated. We want to celebrate and encourage people who are passionate about our profession to get educated. This scholarship fund is a step in that direction. We hope to have many of the veterinarians and companies in our state be champions of our licensed veterinary technicians and support those who want to become LVTs”.

Details are still to be worked out, but will be finalized in time to award the first scholarship(s) in the summer of 2023. The Gaines Family’s generous $ 50,000 donation will provide funding for 1-3 scholarships each valued at $1,000 or more.

Applications will be restricted to graduates of Nebraska high schools who have completed one year of study majoring in veterinary technology, and the intent to work in a small animal medicine and surgery clinic within a 75-mile radius of Omaha.
