NCSF SPRING SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

Leadership Award

Josie Peterson is the 2024 NVMA Past Presidents’ Leadership Award recipient.  Josie will complete her second year in the 2+2 program this spring.  She was selected for her leadership experience and potential for future involvement in organized veterinary medicine.

This scholarship, provided by the past presidents of the NVMA stipulates that to be selected as a recipient of this scholarship, “a student must demonstrate a dedication to the principles of professionalism and ethical behavior, an ability and commitment to encourage others and to lead by example, and an interest in, and an aptitude for the advancement of organized veterinary medicine.”

In nominating Ms. Peterson for the award, Dr. Renee’ McFee enumerated her qualifications, “During both of her years in the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine at UNL, Josie served as the vice president of her class, a UNL delegate for the Student AVMA (SAVMA), and a student representative for the NVMA.  As a second-year student, she also served as the vice president of UNL’s Veterinary Business Management Association, the student representative for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and the student ambassador for Alliance Animal Health.  Josie was also recently selected for the position of SAVMA secretary-elect at this spring’s SAVMA Symposium.”

Dr. Vergil and Lynne Heyer Scholarship

This year’s selection committee has chosen two students to share the $4,500 Heyer Award.  The Honorees are:  Aliya Owens, VM 2 (below left), and Cassandra Black VM 2 (below right).

The Heyer Award is given annually. It was Vergil’s intention that the award be given to a student who had succeeded in the face of adversity, overcome obstacles, and persevered despite hardship.

When informed that she had received the $ 3,000 Heyer Scholarship, Ms. Owens said,  During my early college years, I faced adversity personally, and as a college athlete. These obstacles helped shape me into a stronger version of myself and allowed me to focus on my goal of becoming a veterinarian. My adversity gave me the determination I needed to be a stronger version of myself.”

In appreciation of receiving the $ 1,500 Heyer award, Ms. Black wrote, “Although my life has not been all hardships, I have definitely had a fair share of challenging experiences throughout my life that to this day persist in my current day-to-day. Some of these struggles include many family members with substance addictions, generational trauma, and financial hardships. Despite all of this, I continue to chase after my DVM with a smile on my face and pride in what I have the privilege of doing every single day. My experiences have shaped me into who I am and motivated me to break the cycle by pursuing my dream career regardless of the obstacles I face.”

Pre-vet Scholarship Recipients

The Foundation’s Scholarship Committee has named 4 students as 2023 recipients of the pre-veterinary scholarships of $750 each:

Hailey Moutray (UNL Sophomore)

Minju Lee (UNL Junior)

Jordyn Schommer (UNL Senior)

Haley Bovee (Northeast Community College Sophomore)

The awards are provided by the Pet Memorial Fund.  In addition to the Pre-Veterinary scholarships, the fund supports 2 veterinary student scholarships each fall.

The NCSF board of directors expresses their congratulations, not just to the worthy students, but to all of the mentors, employers, and instructors that enable them to showcase their talents.
