The Nebraska Legislature will reconvene Monday, July20, and work through Thursday, August 13.The Speaker announced his plan today to his colleagues via email, reserving the right to change the plan should conditions in Nebraska change.
Speaker Scheer’s announcement also encouraged his colleagues to consider whether their priority bills will need to be amended in light of the revenue impacts of COVID-19.As reported last Friday, general fund receipts for the state were down nearly $300 million for April, 45.9% below previous forecasts. (Some of the shortfall is due to the delay to July for income tax payments.) As has been the case in years past, bills with any fiscal impact for this biennium will need to be amended to minimize any cost to the state.
The return of the Legislature will certainly look different than anyone would have forecast when they adjourned in mid-March, and much remains to be seen as restrictions are slowly loosened. We will continue to keep you posted as we learn more.
